Wednesday October 1, 2014

 Veteran linemen join Jacksonville roster

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville Sharks announced Tuesday that the team has added a pair of veteran linemen via free agency, as offensive/defensive lineman Jason Holman and offensive lineman Ben Ossai have been assigned to the Jacksonville roster on two-year contracts. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.

The 31-year-old Holman (6’3”, 305) returns to Jacksonville after a recent stint with the Philadelphia Soul, and is set for his fifth overall season in the Arena Football League. During the 2014 season, Holman appeared in 16 games with the Soul, primarily anchoring Philadelphia’s offensive line at the center position.

Over the course of his career, Holman has established himself as one of the most versatile lineman in the League. During his previous two-year stint with the Sharks in 2011 and 2012, Holman excelled at a variety of positions on both sides of the ball. In 2012, Holman started all 18 of the Sharks’ games at a total of four different spots, making seven starts at nose guard, six at defensive end, three at fullback and two at offensive guard. In Week 8 of that season, Holman earned the Ironman of the Week after playing nearly an entire game on both sides of the ball. Holman totaled 11.5 tackles and three sacks on defense and rushed for 23 yards on six carries.

Holman first came to the Sharks in 2011, and was a key contributor to Jacksonville’s championship squad. That season, Holman appeared in 16 games, finishing second on the team with a total of six sacks, becoming the first player in franchise history to record three sacks in a single game. Holman was selected as the Ironman of the Game in the Sharks’ ArenaBowl XXIV victory over the Arizona Rattlers.

Prior to joining the Sharks, Holman saw his first taste of the Arena Football League with the Grand Rapids Rampage in 2008. He has also spent time in other indoor football leagues. A native of Midlothian, Virginia, Holman attended Winston-Salem State University, where he was a First-Team All-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association selection as a junior.

The 27-year-old Ossai (6’6”, 315) is new to Jacksonville but enters his fifth overall season in the Arena Football League. Most recently, Ossai spent the 2014 season with the South Division rival New Orleans VooDoo. Ossai started 10 games during his lone season with the VooDoo, catching three passes for 33 yards in addition to his duties in pass protection and run blocking.

Prior to heading to New Orleans, Ossai spent parts of each of the previous three seasons with the Spokane Shock, appearing in a total of 18 games. Ossai also logged stints with the Canadian Football League’s B.C. Lions in both 2012 and 2013, participating in the Lions’ training camp during both of those seasons. With Spokane, Ossai saw his most significant action as a rookie in 2011, playing in 12 contests that season.

Before beginning his professional career, Ossai was a fixture along the offensive line at the University of Washington, where he made 42 starts in 48 appearances during his time with the Huskies. A native of Bakersfield, California, Ossai attended Stockdale High School.
