Rattlers celebrate Alumni Day July 20
Phoenix, Ariz. – The Arizona Rattlers will celebrate Alumni Day with a special player assignment and retirement for former Rattlers quarterback Sherdrick Bonner on Sunday, July 20 at 3 p.m. when the Rattlers host the Portland Thunder at US Airways Center.
The Rattlers will be assigned Bonner for a one-day contract to allow the quarterback to retire as an Arizona Rattler. “Sherdrick is a major part of the Rattlers history and to see his name in the books retiring from another team just didn’t seem right,” said Rattlers president Joe Windham. “With this year being the 20th anniversary of the Rattlers and Bonner’s first ArenaBowl Championship in 1994, we felt it was perfect timing.”
Bonner spent 14 seasons with the Rattlers and led the team to win ArenaBowl Championships in 1994 and 1997. Arizona retired Bonner’s jersey, #13, in 2010 and in 2012, he was inducted into the Arena Football League (AFL) Hall of Fame.
“I am grateful to come back home and officially be retired as a Rattler,” said Bonner. “I love Phoenix and it broke my heart to leave and play elsewhere. I never wanted to wear anything but black, copper, and teal.”
In addition to Bonner’s celebration, Alumni Day will feature in-game promotions and halftime activities highlighting former Rattlers players in attendance. The AZ Sidewinders dance team will also perform a special routine with former Sidewinders dancers.
After the game, fans are invited to come down on the field to meet players, coaches and the Sidewinders dance team as they sign autographs.
As a part of the season-long community campaign partnership with St. Vincent de Paul, the Rattlers will be accepting non-perishable food item donations as fans enter the game.
