Sharks add quarterback Lee Chapple
JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville Sharks announced Monday that quarterback Alex Carder has been placed on the Other League Exempt List, as Carder is set to sign with the Canadian Football League’s Ottawa RedBlacks. The Sharks also announced that the team has been assigned quarterback Lee Chapple.
The 24-year-old Carder (6’2”, 215) was in the midst of his rookie season in the AFL. As the Sharks’ backup quarterback, Carder appeared in six games, completing two of his three pass attempts for a total of 19 yards. Carder made an impact on special teams, serving as the team’s holder while also working with the team’s kickoff coverage and kickoff return units. Carder chipped in with 2.5 special teams tackles (two solo).
Before joining the Sharks, Carder had worked with the Iowa Barnstormers during training camp prior to the 2014 season. A native of Springfield, Missouri, Carder spent his collegiate career at Western Michigan university.
The 24-year-old Chapple (6'1", 215) returns to the Sharks after appearing in one game with the team during the 2013 season. Chapple competed with the Sharks during training camp that year, rushing for a touchdown in Jacksonville’s preseason scrimmage against the Orlando Predators. The Sharks then brought Chapple back for the team’s Week 13 game against the Utah Blaze.
Prior to beginning his professional career, Chapple starred at the University of North Alabama, where he was a teammate of Sharks wide receiver Tristan Purifoy. As a senior in 2011, Chapple led the Lions to a 9-3 regular-season record, completing 65% of his passes for 3,322 yards and 24 touchdowns against 12 interceptions. A native of Alpharetta, Georgia, Chapple attended Greater Atlanta Christian High School.
Following the transactions, the Jacksonville roster remains at the League maximum of 24 active players.
