Tampa Bay Storm defensive back Chris Smith joins the Montreal Alouettes
TAMPA BAY – Tampa Bay Storm defensive back Chris Smith has signed with the Montreal Alouettes, announced vice president of football operations Jeff Gooch.
“We are excited that Chris has received the opportunity to play in the Canadian Football League,” said Gooch. “While losing him is bittersweet, we are proud that he will get the chance to play with the Alouettes.”
Smith (5-foot-10, 195 lbs., Northern Illinois) was in his second season with the Storm. The Palmetto native led the team with six interceptions on the season, good for third in the league. Smith has 14 interceptions for his career, placing him fourth all-time in Storm history. For the season, Smith has recorded 27.5 tackles, six interceptions, six pass breakups, a forced fumble and a 42-yard fumble return for a touchdown. Smith also had a 5-yard kick return for a touchdown on special teams.
Per League procedure, Smith has been placed on other league exempt, allowing the team to retain his rights.
The Five-Time World Champion Tampa Bay Storm enters its 27th season in the Arena Football League. The Storm will host “Military Appreciation Night,” Saturday, May 24 when it takes on South Division rival, Jacksonville Sharks, on AMALIE Motor Oil Field at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.
