The Spokane Shock (2-1) take down the San Jose SaberCats (2-2) in Friday night AFL action
SPOKANE, WA (April 4, 2014) – The Spokane Shock (2-1) took down the San Jose SaberCats 73-62 on Friday night in the SAP Center, taking control of the Pacific Division in the process.
Shock quarterback Erik Meyer threw for 258 yards and four touchdowns while adding 31 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, providing the fuel for Spokane’s victory. The four rushing touchdowns were the most in a single game in Meyer’s career.
Three of Meyer’s touchdowns through the air went to Shock wide receiver Mike Washington, who led all Spokane receivers with nine receptions for 171 yards. The yardage performance was the second best of Washington’s four-year AFL career, trailing only his 12-reception, 184-yard performance in 2011 while with the Pittsburgh Power.
Spokane defensive back and return specialist Terrance Sanders impressed in both facets of his game, returning six kickoffs for 174 yards and one touchdown while adding an interception on defense.
The Shock stepped on the gas pedal early and never let off; the potent offense found themselves up 14-7 after the first quarter and leading 49-35 at the half. The SaberCats huge 28-point performance in the second quarter kept the game within reach, however, they would never lead in the contest.
SaberCats quarterback Russ Michna racked up big numbers through the air, going 28 of 43 for 352 yards and eight touchdowns. However, his three interceptions, two of which went to Spokane’s Terence Moore, ensured the Shock’s victory.
Rod Harper contributed 12 catches for 177 yards and two scores to the San Jose performance while Reggie Gray hauled in 8 receptions for 75 yards and five touchdowns.
The Shock return home next Saturday, Apr. 12 to take on the Portland Thunder at 7:00 p.m. in a Pacific Division matchup. The contest will be the first between the two clubs and the first of three in 2014.
