AFL MVP returns to Spokane

 Shock assigned 2013 AFL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year QB Erik Meyer

SPOKANE, WA (December 16, 2013) – The Spokane Shock have been assigned quarterback Erik Meyer to the 2014 roster.

Erik Meyer (6-2, 210, Eastern Washington) rejoins the Shock for the 2014 AFL season. During his 2013 campaign for the Shock, Meyer rewrote the Spokane record books and set regular season franchise marks for passing yards (4,667), touchdown passes (112), passing efficiency (123.64), completions (403), completion percentage (68.2), rushing yards (120), and rushing touchdowns (15). He started the 2013 regular season with an AFL-record 193 pass attempts without an interception.

Meyer opened the 2012 AFL season as the Shock’s starter however; his season would be cut short after sustaining a season ending injury in the opening game of the season against the Iowa Barnstormers. After beginning the 2011 season with the Utah Blaze, Meyer would rejoin the Shock roster via a midseason trade. In five games for Spokane he would go on to complete 80 of 107 pass attempts (74.8%) for 967 yards and 22 touchdowns with only three interceptions. In his first AFL season with Spokane in 2010, Meyer saw action in two games while completing 18 of 28 pass attempts (64.3%) for 274 yards and five touchdowns with only one interception.

Prior to his introduction to the AFL, Erik spent time spent time with the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2009), the NFL’s Oakland Raiders (2008), Seattle Seahawks (2007), and NFL Europe’s Cologne Centurions after signing as an undrafted free agent in the 2006 NFL Draft with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Meyer spent his collegiate career at Eastern Washington University. During his collegiate career, he would amass 10,261 yards and 84 touchdowns with only 17 interceptions in 42 games. During his junior and senior seasons, Meyer would be named the Big Sky Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year and go on to earn the Walter Payton Award as a senior in 2005.
