The welcoming lei was officially wrapped around our AFL China team today, with a formal news conference heralding the return of Arena style football to Hawaii for one weekend only.
For the first time in 20 years, Hawaii will host AFL football as the home to the first ever Arena All-Star Game and Experience on November 2nd, 2013.
“We think this is the perfect marriage of our love for football, along with the interests of AFL China in spreading the arena-style game to the Pacific rim,” said former all-pro and Hawaii native Russ Francis, who will team with another former all-pro Ricky Watters and Emmy-award winning broadcaster Lou Tilley to televise the game.
Francis joined AFL China president David Niu, former AFL star wide receiver Darrel Branch (another resident of Hawaii) and other members of the AFL China team at the news conference, which was attended by dozens of football-hungry media from Honolulu and beyond.
Clint Dolezel (Philadelphia Soul) was introduced as the head coach for the the Eastern Conference team, which will be lead by Soul all-star quarterback Dan Raudabuagh, while Kevin Guy will coach the Western Conference team, with his own star quarterback Nick Davilla among the competitors.
