Tuesday July 16, 2013
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose SaberCats announced today that their all-time leading receiver James Roe has returned to the franchise for the remainder of the 2013 season.
"James is one of the best wide receivers to ever play in the Arena Football League," said Owner/Head Coach Darren Arbet. "Adding someone with his talent, leadership and experience is something we are very excited about as we come down the stretch of our 2013 season."
Roe (6-1, 200, Norfolk State) holds the SaberCats franchise records for receptions (905), receiving yards (11,034), receiving touchdowns (277) and points scored (1,726) during his 11 seasons (2000-08, 2011-2012) in the AFL, all with the SaberCats. In 16 games last season, Roe led the SaberCats with 29 receiving touchdowns and was second on the team with 977 receiving yards and 88 receptions. A three-time All-Ironman selection (2003-05), Roe earned second-team All-Arena honors at wide receiver in 2007 after setting career-highs in receptions (127), receiving yards (1,560) and receiving touchdowns (40). He was a member of all three SaberCats ArenaBowl championship teams, leading San Jose with 123 receptions for 1,422 yards and 29 touchdowns in his postseason career.
Roe originally joined the SaberCats in 2000 following three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League from 1996-98, after being drafted by the team in the sixth round (186th overall) of the 1996 NFL Draft. During his time with Baltimore, he totaled 15 receptions for 239 yards and one touchdown in 20 games (seven starts), while serving as a key contributor on special teams with 11 kick returns for 229 yards to go along with 17 punt returns for 159 yards.
Roe played four years (1992-95) at Norfolk State, finishing with career totals of 239 receptions for 4,468 yards and 46 touchdowns, earning consensus Division II All-America honors for the Spartans. He finished his career ranked second all-time among collegiate receivers behind San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jerry Rice (4,693), third among Division II reception leaders (239) and fourth in touchdown receptions (46). During his collegiate career, he recorded 22 100-yard games and hauled in two or more touchdown receptions in 16 games, while notching at least one catch in 41 straight games. Roe registered his best season as a junior, when he caught 77 passes for 1,454 yards and 17 touchdowns.
