2013 Arena Football League Playoff Scenarios For Week 18

Monday July 15, 2013

There are only two weeks of games left to play in the 2013 Arena Football League season, and here at ArenaFan, we are looking at the most up to date information for the playoffs, including all of the playoff scenarios for all of the teams that are still in the thick of the fight.

National Conference

What We Know: Arizona has won the Western Division and is the #1 seed in the National Conference. We also know that if Chicago wins the Central Division, it will travel on the road in the first round of the playoffs against the #3 seed, per SWX Right Now.

Who's In: Spokane and San Jose are locked into Wild Card slots. Iowa was eliminated from playoff contention last week. Utah was the first team eliminated from playoff contention this year.

What's Left to Play For: The Central Division title and the #3 and #4 seeds are up in the air as well.

Chicago Will Win the Central Division and the #2 Seed if… The Rush will win the Central Division with any combination of two wins and/or San Antonio losses in Weeks 18 and 19. Chicago will clinch the Central Division and the #2 seed this week with a win and a San Antonio loss.

San Antonio Will Win the Central Division and the #2 Seed if… The Talons will win the Central Division with any combination of three wins and/or Chicago losses in Weeks 18 and 19. San Antonio cannot clinch the Central Division title this week, but it can be eliminated from contention with a loss and a Chicago win.

Spokane Will Be the #3 Seed if… The Shock will be the #3 seed with any combination of two wins and/or San Jose losses in Weeks 18 and 19. Spokane will clinch the #3 seed this week with a win and a San Antonio loss.

San Jose Will Be the #3 Seed if… The SaberCats will be the #3 seed with any combination of three wins and/or Spokane losses in Weeks 18 and 19. San Jose cannot clinch the #3 seed this week, but it can be locked into the #4 seed and a date at Arizona in the first round of the playoffs with a loss and a Spokane win.

American Conference

What We Know: Jacksonville has won the Southern Division. Philadelphia has won the Eastern Division.

Who's In: No one else has clinched a playoff spot, but both Cleveland and Pittsburgh were eliminated last week.

What's Left to Play For: The #1 seed in the American Conference is still up in the air and can be won by either Jacksonville or Philadelphia. The two Wild Card slots in the conference are being fought for by three teams.

Philadelphia Will Be the #1 Seed if… The Soul will be the #1 seed with any combination of two wins and/or Jacksonville losses in Weeks 18 and 19. Philadelphia can clinch the #1 seed this week with a win and a Jacksonville loss.

Jacksonville Will Be the #1 Seed if… The Sharks will be the #1 seed with any combination of three wins and/or Philadelphia losses in Weeks 18 and 19. Jacksonville cannot clinch the #1 seed this week, but it can be locked into the #2 seed with a loss and a Philadelphia win.

The race for the two Wild Card spots are a bit more complex and will require additional explanation. We will address this team-by-team.

Tampa Bay Storm

The Storm have the easiest road to get into the playoffs. They need one win in either Week 18 or Week 19, or they need either Orlando to lose in Week 18 or New Orleans to lose in Week 18 or Week 19 to clinch a playoff spot.

Orlando Predators

The Predators can clinch a playoff spot this week with a win and a New Orleans loss. They also would be in the playoffs with a win in Week 19 regardless of what happens in Week 18. However, if the Predators were to win in Week 18 and lose in Week 19, and Tampa Bay was to lose both in Week 18 and Week 19, the Preds would also be in the playoffs.

New Orleans VooDoo

The VooDoo have the toughest road to get into the playoffs, but they do control their own destiny. If they win in Week 18 and Week 19, they will be in the postseason. New Orleans would be eliminated this week from the playoffs with a loss and an Orlando win.
