ArenaFan Statement Regarding Playoff Scenarios
Monday July 15, 2013
On Sunday morning, ArenaFan.com published the playoff scenarios for the Arena Football League going into Week 18. ArenaFan used the tiebreakers methods as published by the official AFL website to calculate these tiebreakers.
By our understanding of the rules, the Arizona Rattlers had not clinched the Western Division title, as we believed that the Spokane Shock would have won the division in the event of a tie between these teams via the third tiebreaker. That tiebreaker is stated by the league as follows: "Record against common opponents." Spokane would have the "best record" of the games against common opponents by going 10-2 (.833 winning percentage) in those games versus Arizona's 11-3 (.786 winning percentage) record.
As late as this afternoon, the league informed the media of more specific procedures used to determine tiebreakers that were not previously made available to the media or the public.
According to the league, Arizona has clinched the Western Division title due to the fact that it would finish the season with more wins against common opponents (11) than Spokane would have (10).
In light of the updated material made available to the public, we at ArenaFan have retracted our Week 18 playoff scenarios and will update the material.
For 15 years, we at ArenaFan have covered the Arena Football League with gusto, and it is our goal to present only the best and most accurate information to our fans in as quick of a manner as possible.
