Edwards, Brookins and Stewart Return to SaberCats

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The SaberCats announced today that they have been assigned three players from their 2012 roster; wide receiver Hank Edwards, defensive back Mervin Brookins, both on one-year deals, and defensive lineman Jason Stewart, on a two-year contract. Both Edwards and Stewart spent their first season in San Jose last year, while Brookins spent parts of the last two seasons with the SaberCats. The Arena Football League’s free agency period for exclusive negotiations with players from a team’s 2012 roster opened on Monday, Oct. 15 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 28.
"Getting Hank, Mervin and Jason back on board is a big deal for us," said Owner/Head Coach Darren Arbet. "All three of these players have proven to be productive in this league and having them back in the fold is very significant to our success moving forward.”
Edwards (6-3, 215, Texas Southern) appeared in ten games for San Jose last season, posting 64 receptions for 680 yards and seven touchdowns. In addition, Edwards scored a trio of rushing touchdowns, factoring into the goal line rushing attack. He spent his previous four seasons with the Tampa Bay Storm and had three consecutive 1,000 yard, 20-plus touchdown seasons following his rookie year. Edwards has career receiving marks of 386 catches for 5,321 yards and 103 touchdowns. The Hollywood, Fla. native has also spent time with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. In 2009 he appeared in two games and had two receptions for 17 yards.
Brookins (5-11, 190, Sacramento City College) Brookins appeared in just three games in 2012 due to an injury suffered in training camp and posted ten-and-a-half total tackles with a fumble recovery. He also led the team with five tackles in their playoff game against the eventual ArenaBowl Champion Arizona Rattlers on July 28. In 2011, Brookins appeared in 12 games for the SaberCats and led the team in all-purpose yards with 1,319, recorded 49.5 tackles with three interceptions, caught 36 passes for 418 receiving yards and returned 43 kicks for 788 yards.
In his three AFL seasons he has compiled career totals of 74 tackles, three interceptions and 1,178 total kick return yards. Prior to his professional career the Sacramento native attended Kansas-based Bethel College and Sacramento City College.
Stewart (6-0, 315, Fresno State) appeared in one game for San Jose last season after signing late in the year. He recorded two tackles and a half sack on June 17 on the road against the Kansas City Command. Prior to joining the SaberCats, he most recently spent time with the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League, where he played two seasons. He also played three years with the Los Angeles Avengers of the AFL, where he recorded 47.5 tackles, eight sacks three forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and an interception. He began his professional career as a reserve for the National Football League’s Indianapolis Colts in 2004, signing as an undrafted free agent.
The Bakersfield, Calif. native spent four seasons at Fresno State, where he worked on the defensive line under SaberCats Defensive Line Coach Kerry Locklin. Stewart had a breakout year in his senior campaign in 2002, when he was the team’s third leading tackler with 79 total tackles, five sacks, a forced fumble and an interception. Throughout his collegiate career, Stewart appeared in 49 games, posted 198 total tackles and had eight sacks.
