SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Blaze announced today it will be holding its 2013 open tryout on Saturday, November 10th, 2012. Tryouts will be held from 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.at Soccer City, located at 757 West 11400 South in Draper, Utah.
Head Coach Ron James and his staff will be on hand to evaluate all positions in attendance, with the exception of kickers. Prospects will be tested in the 40-yard dash, broad jump and short shuttle, followed by position-specific drills. All quarterbacks, wide receivers, defensive backs, offensive linemen, defensive linemen and linebackers are encouraged to attend.
Last season, the Utah Blaze signed two prospects from its open tryout. LB Roosevelt Falls started two games at Jack Linebacker after earning a contract following his open tryout performance. WR Augustine Agyei, another open tryout participant, was given a training camp contract and was later assigned to the 24-man regular season roster.
“Open tryouts are an important aspect of assembling our roster for the upcoming season and we’ve had great success finding quality prospects throughout the years,” said Head Coach Ron James. “This is an opportunity for any player to showcase his talent in front of our entire staff. We’re looking for players that are hungry for an opportunity and display the intensity needed to play Arena Football.”
The cost of the open tryout is $60 for those who pre-register with payment online and $80 at the door on the day of the event. Check-in will begin at 7:00 a.m. with tryouts starting promptly at 8:00 a.m. Participants are required to sign a waiver form prior to the tryout. The surface at the venue is field turf – participants should wear appropriate shoes and workout attire. All participants will be receive a Utah Blaze tryout t-shirt.
Over the 26-year history of the Arena Football League, many AFL players have been discovered during open tryouts. The ultimate goal of the organization is to find that diamond in the rough. While there is no requirement to have football experience, it is strongly encouraged.
