Utah offense shows hot hand, Spokane unable to close gap in second half

SALT LAKE CITY, UT (May 4th, 2012) – In a Week 9 AFL match-up the Spokane Shock (3-4) would face a familiar foe in the Utah Blaze (6-2) with Offensive Coordinator Matt Sauk, Jack Linebacker Antwan Marsh and Wide Receiver Shaun Kauleinamoku all having spent time in Spokane.

The Shock showed problems early, racking up ten (10) penalties in the first half alone and were stopped on three different occasions, once on a failed 4th down conversion and twice on interceptions by QB Kyle Rowley. The Utah offense continued their high level of production seen in their previous games as they put up 43 points in the first half lead by QB Tommy Grady.

Blaze receiver Aaron Lesue and Shock receiver Brandon Thompkins would each make their presence known early in the contest. As one of the top TD receiving Wide Receivers in the AFL, Lesue brought in three (3) TD receptions while Thompkins would also snag three (3) TD receptions before the first half would end with the Blaze leading 43-21.

The Blaze would continue their hot streak in the second half with continued offensive production between QB Tommy Grady and WR Aaron Lesue. Spokane would capitalize on an early third quarter turnover and protect the football to keep the game within reach, but were unable to close the gap or slow down the Utah offense.

Shock QB Kyle Rowley and WR Brandon Thompkins were in complete sync throughout the night as Thompkins pulled in 10 receptions for 168 yards and 7 touchdowns. Despite the Shock’s best effort offensively, Spokane could not find an answer for Blaze QB Tommy Grady’s single game record setting performance (11 touchdowns) as Utah defeated Spokane by a final score of 84-63.
