Celebrating the history of the Arena Football League

Papin Heads for the Big Apple

In a move that shocked the entire Arena Football League last month -- move more shocking than Florida State’s upset over Duke; yes, more shocking than Bill Parcels not accepting the coaching job at Tampa Bay; and even more shocking than “Goldust” returning to the WWF Royal Rumble -- Steve Papin was released from the two-time western conference champion San Jose SaberCats. Their loss is New York’s gain, and Steve is ready for the change in venue.

Q: Where you surprised to be released from the SaberCats?

A: I was surprised because they actually did it. There were talks about me being traded, but until it happened I didn’t want to believe it. But yeah it shocked me.

Q: Do you have any bad feelings or hold any grudges towards the SaberCats management or coaches?

A: No. Not at all. I know it is a business. You’re only as good as your last game and same thing happened to Titus Dixon before I got here. They let him go then they brought me in. So I knew it would happen to me someday. It is a business.

Q: After playing all these years with the SaberCats are you going to miss playing in San Jose?

A: Oh yeah, definitely. Like I said there is no bad blood. The San Jose fans I love them. How they supported me and the team. I am going to miss it greatly.

Q: Are you excited about playing in New York for the Dragons?

A: Oh yeah, I’m excited to play with Aaron Garcia and the rest of those guys. I mean don’t get me wrong. I love San Jose. It is my home, but I get to be reborn kind of like Jerry Rice.

Q: Do you plan on following in Kevin Swaynes’ footsteps into the NFL?

A: If I get a chance to I will. But I am not pushing it. It is not a priority of mine. I am very happy where I am at.

Q: How do you feel both physically and mentally?

A: Oh I am ready to go. My motto this year, as it was the last couple years, is strictly business. To show and prove. I feel like I got to prove myself all over again.

Q: So can we expect a Garrison Hearst like comeback for you in 2002?

A: Yeah. Definitely. My goal is to come back and be better than ever in this league.
