Shock Easily Top Rush in Easter Clash

While most families spent Sunday carving their Easter hams, Erik Meyer spent his carving up the Chicago Rush defense. The Spokane Shock shellacked the Chicago Rush by a score 76-51 in their week two matchup. Similar to the impressive win in Cleveland last week, the offense was firing on all cylinders and the defense/special teams made enough big plays to carry the day.
During the 1st quarter, Chicago and Spokane traded scores back and forth and the Rush entered the 2nd quarter with a 21-20 lead. But Spokane would take control in the second quarter and never look back, on the heels of two big plays. Early in the second quarter, electric kick returner Terrance Sanders would weave his way through Chicago’s return coverage and take the Jose Martinez kick 55 yards for a touchdown. It would get worse for the Rush. Late in the 2nd quarter, Kenny Spencer’s kick would take an unfortunate Chicago bounce. The ball ricocheted off the crossbar and sprung backwards right into the hands of Paul Stephens, who would waltz into the endzone for an easy six.
Even without these game changing plays, Spokane likely would have still handled the Rush. Spokane is a perfect 21 for 21 on offensive drives this season. Every time the Shock obtain the ball on offense, they score a touchdown. Their offense has been unstoppable, in every sense of the word. There was a lot of hope that Erik Meyer would become an elite signal caller this year, but nobody could see this coming. Meyer has been outstanding in his first two games. On Sunday, he completed 76 percent of his passes for 314 yards and seven touchdowns. Meyer has yet to throw an interception or be sacked. Spokane’s offensive line bullied Chicago all day. Teams will have to figure out a way to eventually reach Meyer in the pocket, or he will continue to slice and dice defenses with ease.
Spokane has a talented group of receivers, and they love to spread the ball around. In the Allstate Arena, three receivers had at least six receptions. Four receivers caught touchdown passes in the contest. The leader was Adron Tennell, who caught ten passes for 118 yards and three touchdowns. Tennell has proven to be more than a handful this season, leaving defensive minds scratching their heads on how to keep him out of the endzone.
Although the Shock has rolled to a 2-0 record early, it still remains to be seen if they will be able to continue their impressive play against tougher competition. Division rivals Arizona and San Jose are both 2-0 and appear to be the league powerhouses. Those will be high scoring and exciting contests, no doubt. As for the immediate future, Spokane finishes off its season opening three game road slate in Des Moines, Iowa against the Barnstormers. Iowa is also 2-0 this season, coming off a win against New Orleans. Kickoff is set for 5:05 PM PST on April 5th.
